Mearns' quail and the sky islands
Why the rarest of the American quail lives where it lives.
Keith Whitman · May 2026
The Mearns' quail — sometimes called the Montezuma — is the great curiosity of American upland hunting. It lives in the high oak savannas of southern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and northern Mexico. Nowhere else.
It holds tight. The dogs work close. The country is steep. The bird itself is unreasonably handsome.
